Autumn 2 week 1
admin on: Reception
November
What a change of weather this week.
Cold breeze and feeling much more Autumnal.
We are continuing to notice the changes in the environment and there are so many leaves of different colours and shapes falling to the ground.
We have started our new topic: People who help us in our community.
This week we are looking at Fire Fighters as we have two festivals which include fire!
This week we have been Celebrating,
Diwali - The Hindu festival of Light
How is Diwali celebrated?
For many people this five day festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Lamps are lit and windows and doors are left open to help Lakshmi find her way into people's homes.
Other ways that Hindus celebrate the festival include:
- Spring-cleaning the home
- Wearing new clothes
- Exchanging gifts (often sweets and dried fruits) and preparing festive meals
- Decorating buildings with fancy lights
- Huge fireworks displays

Here is a link to explain more. It if does not work here I have put the link onto "Microsoft Teams'.
We made Diva Lamps with clay.
We have also talked and learnt about Bonfire night and how Guy Fawkes in 1605 tried to kill king James 1 and the houses of parliament.
Playing with the fire engine.
Building retractable ladders.
Singing songs about Diwali and Bonfire night.
We built mini bonfires with sticks we collected in the woods and pretended to put them out.
What a busy week.
As you may have seen in the newsletter, we will be running a range of fun activities for the children during the week of the 15th November for Children in Need. If you are in a position to donate, we are asking this to be done online via this link. Please don't bring any money into school. Thank you!

Autumn is coming!
We have had a week noticing changes that are happening outside in the environment. We have been on an autumn walk and have learned new vocabulary such as hibernate, migration and words to describe the fallen leaves; crunch, rustle, crispy.
We started using 5 frames as a way of identifying 'how many' without counting.
In cooking we were tasting 'harvested' vegetables.
Next week we are thinking out the cultural festival of Halloween and reading the book 'Funny Bones' .
Looking and noticing patterns.
Hope to see people on Monday 2.50-3.15 for my Maths workshop.
Next week we will be giving out reading records and passwords for 'maths seeds' and 'reading eggs' for you to have a go at in the October half term.
Thank you,
Mrs Oddy

Happy Harvest.
This week we have been retelling the story of the 'Little Red Hen' .
Ask your child to do this for you with actions. We have tasted different breads and made a class hen called ' The helping hands hen' all to do with working as a team!
In mathematics we have been using the language,
big/small
tall/short
more/fewer
The word 'Less' is used when it is one less or in capacity; There is less milk in the glass.
Next week we are researching Autumn and I normally ask the children to bring in objects they find in the woods; leaves, acorns, conkers but with the weather being so warm the leaves have not even started to change colour. Talk to your children about when changes happen in Autumn to the trees, flower, wildlife.
If you do find some please bring them in.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs Oddy
