Class 2 - Miss Watkins
We have an amazing team in Class 2! We want all children feeling safe and able to develop the confidence, independence and resilience to become lifelong learners – you will hear the cry of ‘Once more with Gusto’ ring out in our classroom.
During the year, we cover the following topics - we start the year ‘exploring’ Explorers and Journeys, before moving onto Scotland and the Great Fire of London in Spring. By the time summer comes around, we will be enjoying learning about the seaside and the land down under – Australia!
In literacy, the children learn how to create their own information texts, non-chronological reports, explanations, instructions, letters and diaries, as well as stories and poems by using high-quality texts and visual stimulus. There’s a lot of grammar to discover including classifying words, using a range of sentences and exploring more exciting punctuation like inverted commas.
Books and reading are very important in Class 2. We will read a wide range of texts just for the love of reading, and as a basis to build our literacy curriculum around too. We incorporate “Read Write Inc.” phonics (where needed), spelling and word building, into literacy activities each week.
In maths, we use a range of activities to include problem-solving and investigations with lots of opportunity for practical, hands-on work. We also build on our core skills in maths – those number bonds to 10 (and 20), and our 2-, 5- and 10- times tables. Every day, the children complete ‘5 questions’ – mental maths which revisit all areas of maths so that concepts really ‘stick’!
We are also really fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy Forest school in Class 2. This takes place on a Friday morning. The class is split into 2 groups and we swap every week to ensure that the children get some quality time in the woods with Mrs Pearce. Class 2 also have some great times in our PE sessions and we will take as many of these outside as the Netherthong weather permits. These take place twice a week on a Wednesday and a Thursday.
The children will also be given two pieces of homework each week. On a Monday, they will receive 10 spellings to learn. These will also be on Spelling Shed. The children will also receive Numbots homework set every Friday. The children have 1 week to complete their work. We would also encourage you to read as often as possible with your children.
We will have a great year in Class 2. There will be lots of fun, giggles and hard work.
