Coordinator Mrs S KendalReligious Education is an important element in the broad and balanced curriculum we aim to provide at Netherthong Primary School.
Through our RE lessons, we aim to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of the principle religions represented in Great Britain. Together, we learn about and from spiritual insights, beliefs and religious practices and explore fundamental questions of human life This includes helping the children to:
- Develop knowledge and understanding of beliefs, values, traditions and religious institutions and their influence on the life of the believer and on communities and societies.
- Look for and learn from the wisdom contained in the stories, sayings and customs of religious and ethical traditions.
- Understand how to manage conflicts which may arise from differing views.
- Develop the ability to make reasoned and informed choices concerning belief and behaviour.
- Enhance and reflect on their own spiritual, moral, emotional and cultural development.
- Develop a positive self-image through reflecting on their own beliefs and home traditions while respecting the right of others to hold beliefs different to theirs.
Religious Education is taught throughout the school in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values and philosophy of the school. Our lessons are inclusive and accessible to all.
At Netherthong Primary, Religious Education plays an important role, along with other areas of the curriculum, particularly PSHE, in promoting the all-round development of our children.

At Netherthong Primary, we implement the Kirklees Agreed Syllabus. The following religions are studied in detail across the year groups:
Christianity
Islam
Judaism
Sikhism
Humanism
As Christianity is the predominant religion in the school’s pupil population and in the community surrounding the school, Christianity is the chosen faith for Progressed Study.
There are no presumptions made as to the religious backgrounds, beliefs and values of the children or staff. We value the religious background of all members of the school community and hope that this will encourage individuals to share their own experiences with others freely. All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity and we value the links made between home, school and a faith community. We acknowledge that each religion studied can contribute to the education of all our pupils.
We promote teaching in Religious Education that stresses open enquiry and first-hand experiences wherever possible for both staff and children. Class-based learning is supported by multifaith visits and visitors into our school and we have developed strong links with the local church. A range of resources are available for our children to use to support their understanding of different faiths.
The children’s progress in Religious Education is assessed half termly.
The children at Netherthong Primary enjoy learning about different religions and why people choose or choose not to follow a religion. Through their Religious Education, the children can make links between their own lives and those of others both in their community and in the wider world. These lessons are vital for our children to develop an understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life, which they are then able to communicate to the wider community.
By the end of year 6, all children will have learned about the beliefs, traditions and festivals of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism and Humanism.
Religious Education offers our children the means in which to understand how other people choose to live and to understand why they choose to live that way. As such, Religious Education is invaluable in an ever changing and shrinking world.
