School Government
Our School Government
At Netherthong Primary School, we believe every child should have a voice in shaping the life of our school. Our School Government plays a vital role in making this happen. Made up of elected representatives from each class (from Class 2 through to Class 6) the School Government helps ensure that pupils are listened to, respected, and actively involved in decisions that affect our school community.
Democracy in Action
Each class elects one representative at the start of the school year, with two representatives chosen in Class 6. Pupils interested in the role present their ideas to their classmates, who then vote for the candidate they feel will best speak on their behalf. This process not only helps pupils learn about democracy but also encourages confidence, communication, and responsibility.
What the School Government Does
The School Government meets regularly to discuss ideas, issues, and suggestions gathered from their classmates. Their work includes:
- Sharing pupil views on school life, learning, and wellbeing, including suggestions for new clubs and activities
- Helping organise events, such as charity fundraising, theme days or community projects
- Supporting school improvement by discussing topics like behaviour, safety, and learning environments
- Representing their classes by feeding back decisions and gathering new ideas.
Recent successes include helping to organise the following events and activities:
- Christmas Art Day in November 2025
- Macmillan coffee morning in September 2025
- Second World War Day in July 2025
- Easter Egg Hunt in April 2025 (kindly supported by Friends of Netherthong)
- ‘Plant a Bulb Day’ in October 2024, where every child in school planted a bulb outside our classrooms and around the school grounds, producing a beautiful array of colour in the spring.
Why It Matters
Our School Government helps pupils understand that their opinions matter and that they can make positive changes within our school. It also builds valuable life skills—leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and respectful debate.
Above all, the School Government reflects the values of ‘Nurture, Progress, Succeed’ we uphold at Netherthong Primary School, working together to make our school the best it can be.
Our Current School Government representatives are:
Joint Prime Ministers: Jude and Maxwell (Year 6)
Minister for Health and Wellbeing: Bodhi (Year 4)
Minister for Education: Arthur (Year 2)
Minister for the Community: Niamh (Year 3)
Minister for Sport and the Outdoors: Esme (Year 5)
